Neglecting the Qur'an Is Allah's Neglect of the Servant
Fajr Khatira [ The Qur'an First ] | Dr. Ahmed Abouseif | 28 October 2025 (No. 243)

O Allah, set right for us our religion, our worldly life and our Hereafter, and prepare for us right guidance in our affair, and bless us in what You have provided us, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. O Allah, bring the affair of the people of Gaza to a good and rightly guided end, O Lord of the worlds, and be gentle with our people in Sudan and Lebanon and elsewhere.
A Phrase I Stopped At
I came across a phrase saying that a servant's neglect of the Qur'an is among the signs of Allah's neglect of the servant. So I stopped at it, and I saw it as almost identical to the saying of Allah, blessed and exalted: ﴿نَسُوا اللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ﴾ ("They forgot Allah, so He forgot them")[1], and we seek refuge in Allah from that, and He, the Mighty and Majestic, is far above any likening.
And if you reflect, you will realize why neglecting the Qur'an is a sign of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, neglecting the servant. For Allah, blessed and exalted, made the Qur'an guidance for creation, and mercy, and light, and healing. So if the servant neglects all of that, then where is his place, and where is his level of nearness to the Lord of Might, glory and exaltation be to Him? To this is added that the Qur'an is the path to nearness to the Lord of Might, glory be to Him.
Verses from Sūrat al-Muzzammil
And from Sūrat al-Muzzammil: ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا نِّصْفَهُ أَوِ انقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا﴾ ("O you who wrap yourself up, stand at night, except for a little: half of it, or reduce from it a little"), and His saying: ﴿فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرْضَىٰ وَآخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ…﴾ ("So recite what is easy of the Qur'an. He knows that there will be among you those who are ill, and others travelling through the land seeking of the bounty of…")[2] ﴿وَآخَرُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ اللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا﴾ ("and others fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite what is easy of it, and establish the prayer and give the zakāh and lend Allah a good loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves, you will find it with Allah, better and greater in reward")[3]
Closing of the Khatira
God willing, blessed and exalted, I ask Allah, the Most High, the Almighty, to guide us and you.
--- [1]: Editor's documentation: al-Tawba: 67. The wording in the transcript was «فنسيه»; the correct wording in the verse is «فنسيهم». [2]: Editor's documentation: al-Muzzammil: 1–4 and 20. The completion of «من فضل» in the verse is ﴿مِن فَضْلِ اللَّهِ﴾, which did not appear in the transcript. [3]: Editor's documentation: al-Muzzammil: 20. His saying ﴿وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّهَ﴾ appeared in the transcript merely as a bare "seeking forgiveness" (istighfār) and was not recorded as text.
